What Is an Absentee Ballot?

An absentee ballot allows eligible Delaware voters to vote by mail if they cannot vote in person on Election Day for an approved reason under Delaware law.

KEY 2026 PRIMARY ELECTION DATES

Primary Election

Election Day: Tuesday, September 15, 2026

  • Voters can request absentee ballots now through the Delaware Voter Portal. You can also call the Department of Elections at (302) 739-4277 to request an absentee ballot.

  • Last day to request absentee ballot:
    Friday, September 11, 2026

  • Absentee ballots must be received by: Tuesday, September 15, 2026 by 8:00 PM

WHO CAN VOTE ABSENTEE IN DELAWARE?

You may qualify for an absentee ballot if you:

  • Are away for work, vacation, military service, or school

  • Are sick or have a disability

  • Are caring for someone who is sick or disabled

  • Work a shift or occupation that prevents voting in person

  • Are living overseas

  • Cannot vote in person due to religious reasons

  • Are incarcerated awaiting trial or serving a misdemeanor sentence

Delaware law currently requires voters to provide a qualifying reason for absentee voting.

IMPORTANT NOTES

  • Delaware DOES NOT currently have universal vote by mail.

  • Voters must apply for an absentee ballot.

  • Ballots must arrive by 8 PM on Election Day to count.

  • Voters should request ballots as early as possible.
